"But it should immediately be said that this volume, like the others, is a monument of precise and learned scholarship, and the Anglophone world will be immensely grateful to have it made more accessible, especially as a casual reader would have no inkling that it began life in a different language. Translators are an underappreciated breed, and Millis and Strack deserve any prizes (there should be more) that may be on offer."Christopher Pelling in: Classics for All, 30.10.2017 -reviews/homers-iliad-basel-commentary-book-xxiv/

The time of twelve days is employed in this book, while the body of Hector lies in the tent of Achilles; and as many more are spent in the truce allowed for his interment. The scene is partly in Achilles' camp, and partly in Troy.

BACK TO GLG Site Greek Lexica for Students and Readers This page is intended as a repository of dictionaries for readers of Ancient Greek Texts. The idea is that your reading of a text will be a much better experience the least time you need to look up for the words on the dictionary, but you need to use the dictionary! Currently this is only a test. In time, it will develop into a place where students and readers will be able to download (and upload, too) lexica tailored for their readings of the Greek classics. To test the idea and the design, here you can download the lexicon for the first book of the Iliad. Lexica come in two flavours: extended and short (see description below), and each flavour has two versions, pdf or epub.

Book 24 is the final book of The Iliad and wraps up the events that have taken place over the course of the epic. In particular, it follows up on the deaths of Hector and Patroclus, which continue to have a major impact on the characters and story. While the Greeks were able to honor Patroclus with a proper burial in Book 23, the Trojans have been unable to do this for Hector. This is concerning not only to the Trojan characters but also to the gods, many of whom were fond of Hector. The contrast between how these two men's bodies have been treated is significant; essentially, the Trojans wish to do for their prince what Achilles has done for his friend.

Achilles' actions in books 23-24 of The Iliad are motivated primarily by grief for Patroclus. Hector was responsible for Patroclus' death, so Achilles drags his body behind his chariot as revenge.
